Place a string or tape measure around your head 1/8" above your ear, across the mid-forehead, completely circling your head. Hold the tape firmly, but not too tightly. Basically, you need to measure your head exactly where the hat will sit. If your measurement falls between sizes, choose the next largest size.

If are still not sure of your head circumference size, the average size of a women's head is 22 1/2.

Slip Stitch: Pull the yarn back over the hook and pull a loop through the stitch. Slip stitches str the shortest crochet stitches. They are used to move yarn across stitches without adding height.

Chain Stitch: Make a slip knot on the hook and draw hooked yarn through it and onto the hook. Chain stitch. Grab the yarn with your crochet hook from back to front.

Single crochet stitch: One yarn over after inserting it, but two loops on the hook after pulling up a loop. Wrap the yarn around the hook and pull it through to finish the stitch.

Yarn over involves placing your hook under the yarn and pulling it over the hook from back to front.

The back loop is the part of the V furthest from you on the opposite side when you hold the crochet in front of you with the Vs on top.

The vertical post is the fabric's base. Post stitches are worked around the post, not into it.

An extended single crochet has a chain stitch in the middle. Starting with a chain stitch, yarn over and pull through both hook loops.

Crochet's body is the front and back posts.
Insert your hook front-to-back-to-front to make front post stitches. Back post stitches are made by hooking from back to front to back.

When crocheting, the right side is the side facing you. Consider the front of your work. The wrong side of a crochet stitch is the side facing away from you.

This pattern has two types of increases. Front-post work.
First increase: crochet 1 in the vertical post and chain 1.

Second increase: For the next round's increase, crochet into the small single strand on the vertical post's right side. Chain 1, increased from the previous round, forms the single strand.

Decrease: shrinking the work in size and width.

Raise the vertical post stitch to the front of the piece.

Place the stitch on the front of the work.

Draw the yarn post for the next stitch.

Pull the yarn through the post, yarn over, pull through one loop, yarn over, through the post, yarn over, pull through two remaining loops.

Pull through the last two loops.

Lower the vertical post stitch to the back of the piece.

Place the stitch on the back of the work.

Draw the yarn post for the next stitch.

Pull the yarn through the post, yarn over, pull through one loop, yarn over, through the post, yarn over, pull through two remaining loops.

Pull through the last two loops.

Hold your chain flat (with your left thumb on top) and be sure the whole chain lies flat and faces up.

With your left hand, twist the chain one half, towards you with your thumb facing your body.

If you want the brim to be on the left side, twist the chain one half, away from you with your thumb facing your body.

On the left end, the back side or bumps will face up. On the right end, the front side or V's will face up.

Insert your hook through the first chain and join the 2 ends together with a slip stitch.

Your starting tail will be on the inside during your work.

Single crochet 1 in the back loop of every chain.
